Dante software on macOS Big Sur and Apple M1-based computers

In November 2020, Apple announced both the release of macOS 11 (Big Sur) and new Mac computers that employ Apple Silicon, with the new M1 ARM SoC in lieu of x86 (Intel) processors.

As of this date, we are still finalizing support for Dante applications on Intel based macs running macOS Big Sur. Support for Intel-based Macs running Big Sur is anticipated in early 2021.

We do not recommend installing Dante software (Dante Controller, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Dante Via) on any Macs that use the new M1 ARM SoC. We are working to ensure proper compatibility with these new products, expected later in 2021.

Minimum System Requirements

  • Core i5 CPU
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 1 GB storage
  • 1Gbps network interface / adaptor
  • 1Gbps network switch (Wi-Fi is not supported)

Note: Dante Via is not supported on virtual machines

Note: If you have a pre-2011 computer, please see issue VIA-2644 in the known issues.

Bug Fixes:
  • VIA-2440: The Dante Via audio engine can crash when audio resource usage is very high.
Known Issues:
  • VIA-2644: For Apple Mac computers with older (pre-2011) hardware – specifically, computers with chipsets that do not support AVX – the current GA version of Dante Via for macOS (v1.2.0.8) will fail to pass audio to/from external physical soundcards, with the message ‘the audio device was unable to initialize’.
These older computers are supported by the previous release of Dante Via (v1.1.1.1 – available here), on macOS v10.12.6 or earlier. For pre-2011 computers running macOS 10.13, Dante Via does not currently support external physical soundcards. This issue will be addressed in an upcoming release. • VIA-2354: Duplicate application names can cause duplicate channels on the Dante network.
  • VIA-2641: Subscriptions between Dante Via devices may not automatically recover after rebooting DDM. Workaround: Resubscribe the affected channels.

  • VIA-2171: On OS X 10.9.5, Dante Via does not automatically become the default audio device after installation. Workaround: After installing Dante Via on OS X 10.9.5, manually set Dante Via as the default output and input devices in the System Sound Preferences.
  • VIA-2639: When enrolled in a domain Dante Via might not display the correct domain manager hostname if it has changed.
  • VIA-2638: When enrolled in a domain application icons may not appear if Dante Via is on a different subnet.
  • VIA-2614: Access control request may not appear when config is Prevent in DDM.
  • VIA-2612: When two (or more) network interfaces are available on the computer Dante Via may still appear on the network that is not currently selected.

  • VIA-2583: Listening device names may be truncated for long lists of audio sources.

Audinate’s Support for Inclusive Language

To our customers: some of the terminology used in Dante products has been changed to align with modern usage. Specifically, areas related to Dante clocking now refer to “Primary Leader Clock”, “Leader Clocks” and “Follower Clocks” to describe the functions of each role more clearly.
